CHAPTER 7: The File Beside the Cake

Evelyn did not bring out the file like a weapon.
She brought it out like a woman who had carried fear too long and finally set it down.
It had been hidden beneath folded linen on the service cart, sealed in a plain cream envelope. Grant recognized his name on the outside, written in Catherine's assistant's neat hand.
He opened it there, beside the untouched wedding-white cake made for the foundation's anniversary toast.
The first page was a consent form for a private disciplinary program in Vermont. The second page listed Henry's supposed emotional problems. The third recommended removal of primary caregiver attachments.
Grant read the phrase twice.
Primary caregiver attachments.
The language was clean, clinical, and bloodless. That made it worse. Someone had taken a child's need to feel safe and translated it into a problem to be removed.
He looked at Evelyn.
She held Henry closer but did not hide from the room.
"They meant me," she said.
Catherine moved toward the file. Grant pulled it back before she could touch it.
That one small movement changed the balance of the marriage.
Catherine whispered, "You cannot believe staff over your wife."
Grant's eyes stayed on the document.
"I am believing my son," he said.
