CHAPTER 4: The Woman in Gray

Evelyn had worked in the Whitmore house for four years.
That was how Catherine introduced her: the housekeeper.
Not the woman who sat beside Henry's hospital bed when he had a fever. Not the woman who made him paper stars after his mother forgot his school play. Not the woman who learned to braid patience into every morning because the boy woke afraid to make noise.
Just the housekeeper.
Evelyn accepted the word because she needed the job and because Henry needed one adult in that house who did not turn love into performance.
She had rules for herself.
Never correct Catherine in public. Never argue in front of Henry. Never let Grant see too much, because powerful men often preferred clean rooms to uncomfortable truths.
But Henry was shaking in her arms now.
The rules ended there.
Evelyn knew what would happen if Catherine fired her. She had already packed a small envelope of records, not because she wanted revenge, but because she feared what would happen to Henry if the only adult he trusted disappeared without explanation.
She had prayed she would never need to open it in public.
Catherine stepped closer, cheeks flushed beneath flawless makeup.
"Give him to me."
Henry whispered into Evelyn's collar, "No. Please, Mommy."
The second time he said it, no one could pretend they had misheard.
Grant rose from his chair.
His bow tie looked suddenly too tight.
