CHAPTER 11: The Staff Finally Speaks

The first witness was not a guest, a lawyer, or a billionaire.
It was Nora, the house manager, standing beside the flower table with trembling hands folded against her apron.
“Mrs. Cross did not fall,” Nora said.
Grant turned on her. “Be careful.”
Nora flinched, then looked at Amelia.
Amelia nodded once.
That was enough.
“Ms. Vale pushed her,” Nora continued. “Mr. Cross told us to stay quiet. He said anyone who spoke would be gone by morning.”
Two more staff members stepped forward after her.
Then a driver.
Then the young server who had been crying in the pantry because she had seen Amelia catch the rail and could not help without losing her job.
The hall changed as each voice entered it.
Grant had built his authority on silence.
Amelia watched silence leave him one witness at a time.
