CHAPTER 13: The Woman on the Stairs Stands Up

Amelia refused the wheelchair at first.
The doctor did not argue with her pride. She simply waited until Amelia understood standing was not the same as proving strength.
Charles wrapped his coat around her shoulders.
The satin dress, the chandelier, the staircase, the watching faces—everything blurred for a moment except the steady movement beneath her palm.
Her baby kicked once.
Small. Alive. Unaware of marble, money, or betrayal.
Amelia breathed through the sudden pressure in her throat.
Grant saw it and mistook the emotion for weakness.
“Amelia,” he said, “don’t do this to us.”
She looked at him for a long time.
“There is no us on a staircase where I had to protect our child from the woman you brought into our home.”
No one moved.
Even the chandelier seemed quieter.
Then Amelia sat in the wheelchair because dignity was not destroyed by needing help.
