CHAPTER 1: The Bride Who Walked Away

Evan recovered quickly.

“That footage proves nothing,” he said. “I found the bracelet and put it somewhere safe.”

Marcus kept the tablet raised. “You placed it in the child’s purse twelve minutes before accusing her.”

Guests began pulling out their phones. Evan’s face tightened.

“No recording,” he snapped. “This is a private event.”

Laura looked at the man she had married less than three hours earlier. She remembered every warning she had explained away: the way he checked her messages, the way he criticized Lily for being “too sensitive,” the way he grew cold whenever Laura mentioned the trust fund left by Lily’s late father.

Evan stepped toward her.

“Laura, come upstairs. We’ll discuss this privately.”

Lily’s fingers tightened around her mother’s waist.

“No,” Laura said.

It was a small word, but it changed the room.

Evan lowered his voice. “Don’t embarrass yourself.”

“You accused an eight-year-old of theft in front of everyone.”

“She needs discipline.”

“She needs protection—from you.”

Laura removed her wedding ring. Evan watched in disbelief as she placed it on the table beside an untouched glass of champagne.

His mother rose abruptly. “Laura, people make mistakes under pressure. Think about the scandal.”

Laura turned toward Margaret. “Why didn’t you look surprised when you saw the video?”

Margaret went pale.

Before she could answer, Evan grabbed Laura’s wrist. Marcus immediately moved between them.

“Sir, let go.”

Evan released her, but his expression had changed. The polished groom was gone. In his place stood a furious man who had lost control of the story.

Laura took Lily’s hand and walked toward the ballroom doors. Her sister Rachel followed, gathering Laura’s coat and purse. Behind them, guests whispered while the wedding band stood motionless on the stage.

At the doorway, Evan called after her.

“You leave now, and you’ll regret it.”

Laura stopped but did not turn around.

“No, Evan. Marrying you is what I regret.”

Outside, rain had begun to fall. Laura climbed into Rachel’s car with Lily pressed against her side.

As they drove away, Marcus sent Laura a message.

I made a secure copy of the footage.

A second message arrived immediately afterward.

Someone just tried to delete the original.
