CHAPTER 6: Lily Remembers the Blue Ribbon

Investigators searched Evan’s office and found shredded documents, an empty safe and a second phone registered under a false company name.

Yet the most important clue came from Lily.

She was sitting at Rachel’s kitchen table, drawing the ballroom with blue and silver crayons. Laura noticed a thin blue ribbon in the picture, tied around the handle of the white purse.

“Your purse didn’t have a blue ribbon,” Laura said.

“It did before the wedding.”

Lily explained that Vanessa had tied the ribbon onto the purse and told her it marked the “special flower-girl bag.” Later, Evan removed it just before the reception.

“Did he say why?”

“He said the ribbon looked cheap.”

Marcus examined the photographs taken by the wedding photographer. In early images, Lily’s purse had a blue ribbon. In later ones, the ribbon was gone.

Hotel footage showed Vanessa carrying an identical white purse with the same ribbon through the service corridor. Investigators found the duplicate bag in a trash bin behind the venue.

Inside it were strands of Margaret’s silver dress fabric and a printed card bearing Lily’s name.

The original plan became clear.

Vanessa would switch the purses. Evan would “discover” the bracelet inside the marked bag. Even if Lily never touched it, photographs would connect her to it.

But Lily had refused to leave her purse on the flower-girl table. She carried it with her because it contained a small photograph of her late father.

So Evan improvised. He placed the bracelet directly into her real purse.

His impatience had exposed him to the hallway camera.

That night, Laura sat beside Lily in bed.

“You helped the police today,” she said.

“Am I in trouble?”

“No. You remembered something important.”

Lily touched the photograph beneath her pillow. “Daddy used to say bad people forget that children notice things.”

Laura smiled through tears. “Your daddy was right.”

Her phone rang.

It was Maya.

Police had located Vanessa at a private airport. She had been arrested before boarding the plane.

But Evan was not with her.

Vanessa claimed she did not know where he had gone.

Then she offered a deal.

She would reveal everything—if Laura agreed to hear what Evan had planned for the honeymoon.
