CHAPTER 7: The Honeymoon That Never Was

Vanessa’s confession lasted nearly four hours.

She admitted helping Evan coordinate the purse switch, the edited video and the false police report. In exchange, Evan had promised to pay her debts and give her a job managing one of the companies he intended to create with Lily’s trust money.

But the wedding accusation was only the beginning.

During the honeymoon, Evan planned to provoke Laura into an argument at a private villa. Vanessa had arranged for hidden cameras to record selected moments. Edited clips would make Laura appear violent and emotionally unstable.

At the same time, Evan would begin presenting himself as Lily’s calm, responsible protector.

“He wanted custody?” Laura asked.

“Not exactly,” Vanessa replied. “He wanted temporary control. Long enough to petition the court about the trust.”

Maya leaned forward. “And if Laura refused?”

Vanessa’s face tightened. “He said accidents happen near cliffs.”

The room went still.

It was not proof of an attempted crime, but it revealed the darkness behind the plan.

“Where is Evan now?” the detective asked.

“I don’t know,” Vanessa said. “But he kept emergency cash at his father’s old hunting cabin.”

Police drove there that night.

They found burned papers in the fireplace, fake identification and a suitcase. Evan was gone.

On the wall hung photographs of Laura and Lily taken without their knowledge: outside school, at the grocery store, near Laura’s bank.

One photograph had been taken months before Laura met Evan.

Their romance had not been chance.

He had chosen her.

When Laura learned this, she locked herself in the bathroom and gripped the sink until her hands stopped shaking. Every tender memory now felt contaminated: their first meeting at a charity dinner, his careful interest in Lily, his promise that he understood grief.

Rachel waited outside the door.

“You loved the person he pretended to be,” she said. “That doesn’t make you foolish.”

Laura opened the door.

“No,” she replied. “But believing him almost cost Lily everything.”

At midnight, Marcus called.

The cloud server containing the CCTV footage had received repeated hacking attempts.

Someone was still trying to erase the truth.

And the login location was only three streets away.
