CHAPTER 2: The Night After the Vows
Rachel took them to her apartment across town.
Lily sat wrapped in a blanket, still wearing her flower-girl dress. She had not cried since leaving the hotel. That frightened Laura more than tears would have.
“Sweetheart,” Laura said softly, “you know none of this was your fault.”
Lily stared at her hands. “Mr. Evan said everyone would hate me.”
Laura felt the room tilt.
“When did he say that?”
“Before the ceremony. He told me I had to be good because you loved him now. He said if I caused trouble, you might send me away.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
Laura knelt in front of Lily. “Listen to me. There is nothing you could ever do that would make me send you away.”
“Even if I stole something?”
“You didn’t.”
“But if I did?”
Laura took Lily’s face gently between her hands. “Even then, I would help you. I would never abandon you.”
Only then did Lily begin to cry.
Laura held her until she fell asleep.
At two in the morning, Marcus called. He explained that the ballroom recording had been deleted from the hotel system using a management password. Fortunately, the corridor camera automatically backed up to an off-site server.
“Who had the password?” Laura asked.
“The hotel manager, two supervisors and the event coordinator.”
Evan’s cousin, Vanessa, had been the event coordinator.
Laura remembered Vanessa insisting on arranging the security schedule, the seating plan and even the placement of Lily’s purse.
“This wasn’t spontaneous,” Laura whispered.
“No,” Marcus replied. “It was planned.”
The next morning, Laura’s phone contained fifty-seven missed calls. Some were from guests. Most were from Evan.
His final voicemail was calm.
“Come home before this gets ugly. I can explain everything. You know I love you.”
Then another notification appeared.
A video from the wedding had been posted online. It showed the bracelet falling from Lily’s purse and Evan accusing her—but it ended before Marcus entered with the CCTV evidence.
The caption read:
BRIDE’S DAUGHTER CAUGHT STEALING AT LUXURY WEDDING.
Within an hour, strangers were calling Lily a spoiled thief.
Laura stared at the screen in horror.
Evan had lost control inside the ballroom.
Now he was trying to control the world outside it.
