CHAPTER 3: The First Lie Goes Viral

Laura wanted to post the CCTV immediately.

Marcus advised her to wait until the hotel’s attorney preserved the files. Rachel wanted to fight fire with fire. Lily wanted the internet to disappear.

By noon, the edited clip had been shared thousands of times.

Evan released a statement through his publicist.

He claimed he had discovered the bracelet during the reception and had become “confused in an emotionally charged moment.” He asked the public to respect the family’s privacy while Laura sought “appropriate support.”

The implication was clear: Laura was unstable, and Lily was troubled.

“He’s rewriting everything,” Rachel said.

Laura read the statement twice. “He’s not defending himself. He’s building a case against me.”

For months, Evan had encouraged Laura to sell her house and move into his larger estate. He had asked to be added to Lily’s emergency contacts. He had even suggested becoming co-trustee of the inheritance Lily would receive at eighteen.

Laura had refused each time.

That afternoon, attorney Maya Chen arrived at Rachel’s apartment. She specialized in family law and financial abuse.

“The marriage can likely be annulled,” Maya said. “But we need to understand why he staged this.”

Laura handed her a folder of documents. “Lily’s father left her a trust worth nearly four million dollars. I manage it, but I can’t spend the principal without court approval.”

Maya’s eyes sharpened. “Did Evan know that?”

“He knew everything.”

“And did he ever suggest Lily was dishonest, unstable or unsafe?”

Laura remembered the notes Evan had encouraged her to keep whenever Lily had nightmares or struggled at school.

“He said documentation would help us find the right therapist.”

“It could also be used to question your fitness as trustee.”

Laura felt sick.

A knock sounded at the door.

Margaret stood outside, wearing the same silver dress she had worn to the wedding. Her makeup was gone. She looked twenty years older.

“I need to speak to Laura,” she said.

Rachel blocked the doorway. “Why?”

Margaret looked over her shoulder as though she had been followed.

“Because Evan didn’t plan to destroy only Lily’s reputation.”

She held out a sealed envelope.

“He planned to take her money too.”
