CHAPTER 5: The Man Outside the School

The police opened an investigation, but Evan was not arrested immediately.

His attorney argued that the bracelet had never technically left the wedding venue and that Evan’s actions were a family misunderstanding rather than attempted theft or fraud.

Meanwhile, the online abuse continued.

Laura kept Lily home from school for two days. When they finally returned, a group of parents stood near the entrance. Some offered hugs. Others raised phones.

One woman whispered loudly, “That’s the little girl from the video.”

Lily stopped walking.

Laura crouched beside her. “Look at me, not them.”

Before they reached the door, Marcus stepped from a parked car. The hotel had temporarily assigned him to cooperate with investigators, but he had come on his own time.

“There’s a man across the street photographing you,” he said.

Laura followed his gaze.

Evan stood beside a black SUV.

He smiled and waved as though he were a devoted stepfather.

Maya had warned Laura that because the marriage had not yet been annulled, Evan might claim a continuing family relationship. He could not legally take Lily, but he could create confusion, fear and headlines.

Evan crossed the street.

“Laura, we need to stop this public circus.”

“You created it.”

“I made one mistake.”

“You planned it for weeks.”

His smile flickered. “Margaret has always been confused. She drinks. No one will believe her.”

Marcus moved closer but did not touch him.

Evan glanced toward Lily. “Lily, tell your mother I never meant to scare you.”

Lily hid behind Laura.

“Do not speak to her,” Laura said.

Evan lowered his voice. “You’re making this worse for yourself. Every angry scene helps prove my point.”

Laura realized he wanted her to shout. Cameras were watching. He needed the image of an unstable mother.

So she smiled.

“You’re right, Evan. The cameras should see everything.”

She lifted her phone, which was recording.

His face hardened.

That evening, Maya filed for an emergency protective order. The audio from outside the school became part of the application.

But when police went to deliver the order, Evan was gone.

So were several boxes from his office.

And according to airport records, Vanessa had purchased two tickets to a country with no easy extradition agreement.
