CHAPTER 10: Walk Out Under Her Own Name
The mansion still looked the same after midnight.
The roses stayed white. The marble stayed polished. The chandelier kept shining over a room that had finally stopped pretending elegance meant innocence.
At the threshold, she paused long enough for the baby to shift again, steady and alive beneath her hand.
That small movement felt like a signature no attorney could forge.
Arthur offered Mara his arm, but he did not pull her toward the door.
He had taught her power badly once, by protecting her too completely. Tonight he waited until she chose where to stand.
Mara placed one hand over her belly and the other on the banister.
She looked at Camden one last time.
“My child will grow up in this house,” she said. “But not inside your fear.”
Camden swallowed.
“What happens to me?”
Mara almost smiled.
Not because it was funny.
Because after all his speeches about legacy and control, his final question was still only about himself.
“The board will decide your company,” she said. “The courts will decide the rest.”
She turned toward the open doors, where rain silvered the steps outside.
Behind her, Camden stood beneath the chandelier, smaller than the shadow he had cast for years.
Mara walked out under her own name.
No one stopped her.
