CHAPTER 6: Her Father Did Not Raise His Voice

Arthur Whitmore had built companies in rooms where men smiled while sharpening knives under the table.
He did not need volume to be dangerous.
Mara’s knees weakened only after she heard her father’s voice. Relief was its own kind of danger; it almost made her crumble.
She stayed upright because she wanted Camden to see the difference between being rescued and being believed.
Camden recovered enough to laugh once.
“Arthur, this is a private marital matter.”
“Then you should not have used my lawyers, my house, and my daughter’s trust to stage it.”
Sloane took half a step back.
The attorney beside Arthur opened the briefcase and removed a sealed folder.
Mara saw Camden recognize the label.
Not because he could read it from across the room.
Because guilty men recognize the shape of the thing they hoped would stay hidden.
Arthur continued, calm as winter.
“Your emergency board vote was never valid. Your debt facility was conditional. Your access to Whitmore assets ended the moment you attempted coercive transfer.”
Camden’s mouth parted.
“You cannot do that.”
Arthur looked at Mara.
“She can. I am only here because she asked me to witness it.”
For the first time all night, Camden turned fully toward his wife.
