CHAPTER 5: The Doors Open Behind Him

The front doors had been closed since sunset.
Mara had noticed because she had asked the night staff to keep the house quiet. No visitors. No reporters. No guests pretending charity meant kindness.
Camden had not known the house cameras fed to a private security office beyond the east gate. He had not known Mara had asked the staff not to interrupt unless her father arrived.
Every cruel word, every gesture toward the papers, every smile from Sloane had been preserved before the doors opened.
So when the brass handles turned, every face in the foyer moved at once.
Camden froze.
Sloane lowered her wine glass.
Mara did not turn right away.
She already knew the rhythm of that entrance.
The doors opened inward, and cold night air slid across the marble floor.
Arthur Whitmore stepped over the threshold in a charcoal overcoat, silver hair damp from rain, two security men behind him and a family attorney walking at his side with a black briefcase.
He did not look surprised.
That made Camden look terrified.
Arthur’s eyes went first to Mara, then to her belly, then to the documents on the piano bench.
Only after that did he look at Camden.
“Move away from my daughter,” he said.
The room became so quiet that the chandelier seemed loud.
