CHAPTER 4: The Name Camden Borrowed
Camden liked telling people he built Vale Meridian from the ground up.
It was a beautiful story for magazines.
There were emails too, printed and sealed upstairs in the nursery safe: Camden asking how fast control could shift, Camden asking whether the trust could be accessed before delivery, Camden writing the word wife as if it were a problem to solve.
Mara had not cried when she found them. She folded the pages, locked the safe, and called her father before sunset.
It was also fiction.
Mara’s mother had owned the first building. Mara’s father had guaranteed the first loan. Mara’s family trust had carried the company through two silent collapses while Camden smiled at ribbon cuttings and accepted applause meant for money he never controlled.
Mara had kept quiet because marriage made her generous.
Then motherhood made her awake.
In the past month, she had discovered new account structures, unusual debt, and a private plan to move voting control before the baby arrived.
Sloane was not the scandal.
She was the decoration placed on top of it.
Camden wanted the trust because he wanted freedom from the woman whose name still held the doors open.
Mara looked at the gold pen.
Then at Camden.
“Did you really think I would sign away my child’s inheritance while your mistress watched?”
Camden stepped closer.
“I think you will do what keeps this family intact.”
Mara’s voice dropped.
“This family was intact before you brought her here.”
