CHAPTER 8: Every Contract Turns Cold
Camden’s phone began to vibrate on the marble console.
Once, then again, then again.
Through the open doors, rain ticked against the stone steps. Inside, Camden’s future was being dismantled in language so formal it sounded almost merciful.
Mara understood then why her father loved procedure. Procedure denied men like Camden the pleasure of pretending they were victims of passion.
No one moved to pick it up.
The screen lit with names Mara had seen at board dinners. A bank chairman. A hotel partner. A private equity director who called Camden brilliant every time Arthur’s money stood behind him.
Camden stared as if the phone were betraying him.
It was only informing him.
Arthur nodded to the attorney.
“Tell him.”
The attorney’s voice was clean and professional.
“Vale Meridian’s interim credit has been suspended. The board has been notified of breach exposure. The Westlake acquisition will not close under your signature. Any attempt to contact Mrs. Vale without counsel present will be documented.”
Camden’s face lost color by degrees.
“Mara,” he said, and for the first time he sounded like a husband instead of an owner.
She hated that it had taken consequences to teach him softness.
“Do not use my name like a door you still have a key to,” she said.
