CHAPTER 10: The Woman the Cameras Followed

By noon, Daniel's phone would not stop ringing.
By three, two banks had paused credit lines.
By five, Voss Holdings would announce an internal review using language clean enough for television and cold enough for investors to understand.
But on the courthouse steps, the ending was quieter.
Amelia stood beside Victor while the medic wrapped a light bandage around her wrist. Her navy dress was dusty. Her face was pale. Nothing about her looked defeated.
Daniel approached slowly, as though humility could be assembled in the space between two steps.
"Amelia, please. Let me explain."
She looked at him with the calm of a woman who had finally stopped translating cruelty into excuses.
"You already explained yourself," she said. "You looked at her first."
Daniel had no answer.
Victor opened the car door at the curb. His attorneys waited behind him. The reporters moved with Amelia now, not Natalie, not Daniel.
Before she got in, Amelia turned once more toward the courthouse.
"File everything, Dad," she said.
Victor nodded.
The courthouse doors closed behind them, and Daniel finally understood that the fall on the steps had not ended Amelia Hart.
Natalie remained near the upper steps until a police officer asked her to come inside for a statement. She looked once toward Daniel, but Daniel was busy watching Amelia leave.
It was the last time either of them would see her as the woman they thought they could push aside.
It had only ended the lie that she was alone.
