CHAPTER 6: The Papers Daniel Never Read

The first folder appeared before the ambulance call finished connecting.
Victor's attorney handed it to Daniel like a courtesy, not a request.
Daniel opened it with fingers that had begun to tremble.
Across the top were names he recognized and terms he had chosen to forget.
Bridge loans. Trust guarantees. Silent equity. Conditional control clauses.
Amelia had not been the ornamental wife in his empire.
She had been the reason the empire survived its first winter.
Her family had carried the Voss hotel deal when Daniel's investors fled. Her trust had secured the downtown tower. Her signature had kept payroll alive during the lawsuit he blamed on bad luck and hid from the press.
He had called her dependent for so long that he forgot who depended on whom.
Victor looked down at him from one step above.
"You had twenty days to disclose the affair before signing settlement terms," he said. "You lied under oath this morning."
Daniel swallowed.
Daniel's eyes moved faster with every line. The folder was not a threat. It was a map of every lie he had built his confidence on.
He remembered Amelia sitting beside him in those early meetings, quiet while older men agreed to terms because her father had already made one phone call.
Behind him, Natalie took one step back.
