CHAPTER 9: The Name on the Building

A gust of wind moved across the steps, lifting the edge of Amelia's hair from her face.
The courthouse behind her was older than every marriage, every scandal, every headline gathering at its entrance.
But the annex beside it carried a bronze plaque most people passed without reading.
Daniel had passed it too, hundreds of times.
Hart Civic Foundation.
He looked at the name now as if it had appeared by magic.
Amelia followed his gaze.
"My mother funded that wing," she said. "My father never mentioned it because decent people don't use charity as a weapon."
Victor's jaw tightened, but he let his daughter speak.
Amelia rose carefully with the medic's help. She refused Daniel's hand and took her father's instead.
Natalie stood frozen above them, cream suit bright against the stone, every inch of her suddenly visible.
Amelia looked up at her.
No one clapped. No one cheered. The only sound was the city moving again beyond the stone plaza.
That restraint made the moment feel heavier. Revenge, Amelia realized, did not need noise when the truth was finally standing in daylight.
"You wanted me beneath you for the cameras," she said. "So smile. They're still rolling."
