CHAPTER 3: The Husband Who Hesitated

Daniel moved after Amelia fell, but hesitation had already betrayed him.
For one clean second, he had looked at Natalie first.
Amelia saw it from the step where her cheek rested against the warm stone.
He was afraid for Natalie.
Afraid of cameras. Afraid of scandal. Afraid the woman beside him had gone too far in public.
Not afraid enough for his wife.
That hurt more than the fall.
He knelt beside Amelia and reached for her shoulder. She pulled away before his fingers touched her.
"Amelia, don't make this worse," he muttered.
A reporter heard him.
So did the court officer standing near the rail.
Amelia gave a small, breathless laugh that was almost silence.
"You still think I can make this worse?" she asked.
Daniel's eyes flicked toward the courthouse doors.
He finally saw the men coming down from the entrance.
The handrail was cold under Amelia's fingers. She used it to stay upright while Daniel kept searching for a version of himself that looked innocent.
He had always been good in boardrooms, good with investors, good at turning apologies into strategy. But this was not a boardroom. The stone did not negotiate.
And the color left his face.
