CHAPTER 2: The Joke Everyone Heard

It had started as a joke, because rich families often hid their worst behavior behind laughter.
Lily had reached for a small sugared pastry from the dessert table. Margaret saw her before anyone else did and lifted her voice just enough for nearby guests to hear.
“Careful, sweetheart. That table is for family.”
Lily looked confused. “I am family.”
A few cousins laughed. Someone covered a smile with a napkin. Carter did not move from his conversation near the flower arch.
Grace saw Lily's face change before the first tear appeared.
Then Margaret took a glass of punch from a server's tray and, with the elegance of a woman dropping a curtain, tipped it over Lily's dress.
Not enough to look violent. Enough to humiliate.
The peach satin darkened across the little girl's stomach. Lily froze, both hands lifted as if touching the stain would make it disappear.
Margaret said, “Now everyone can see what happens when trash reaches too high.”
For one long second, Lily tried to smile because children often believe adults are kinder if they pretend not to hurt. Then she looked down at the ruined satin, and the room heard the first breath break in her chest.
The laughter died too late.
Grace crossed the floor before the glass touched the table again.
