CHAPTER 3: Carter Chooses the Wrong Silence

Grace did not shout.
That frightened Margaret more than shouting would have.
Grace knelt in front of Lily first, wiping the punch from her daughter's small hands with the white linen napkin she pulled from the nearest chair.
“Look at me,” Grace whispered. “You did nothing wrong.”
Lily tried to breathe, but it came out broken.
Carter arrived then, face tight, voice low and angry for the wrong reason.
“Grace, don't make a scene.”
Grace looked up at him slowly.
There were two kinds of betrayal in marriage. The loud kind, everyone noticed. And the quiet kind, where a man watched his mother shame his own child and worried only about the room.
“She called your daughter trash,” Grace said.
Carter glanced toward the guests, then back at Grace. “My mother was upset. Lily should have behaved.”
Lily's fingers curled around Grace's sleeve.
Grace stood, still holding her daughter close.
“Say that again,” she said.
Carter did not understand the warning in her voice.
Grace had spent seven years making excuses for Carter's divided loyalties. He was tired. He was pressured. His mother was difficult. Tonight, watching Lily shrink beside her, every excuse became a weight she refused to carry another step.
“I said she needed discipline.”
