CHAPTER 8: The Wedding Turns Against Them

Margaret recovered first because pride was the only thing she had practiced longer than cruelty.
“Charles, this is a private family matter.”
Charles looked at her as if she had spoken from very far away.
“No, Margaret. It became a venue matter when you assaulted a child in my ballroom.”
A few guests inhaled sharply.
Carter stepped forward. “That word is unnecessary.”
Grace saw the old version of her husband still trying to return, the one who believed language could soften what hands had done.
Charles turned to one of the men behind him.
“Please escort my granddaughter to the private lounge with her mother. Bring a dry dress from the concierge floor.”
Lily looked at Grace for permission.
Grace nodded, but Lily would not let go.

“Nobody here gets to decide what you are,” he said. “Do you understand?”
Lily nodded through tears.
The staff moved quickly now, not with panic, but with loyalty finally pointed in the right direction. A manager appeared near the service entrance and gave Charles a small nod that told Grace the hallway had already been secured.
Across the room, Margaret's friends began stepping away from her.
