CHAPTER 7: The Name They Pretended Not to Know

Charles Whitmore did not raise his voice.
He never had to.
The Hart family had spent three years accepting his introductions, his financing, his quiet approval, and his tolerance. They had used his club, his hotel contacts, his investment circle, and tonight, his ballroom.
But they had carefully avoided saying what all of that meant.
Grace was not the lucky girl Carter had rescued from a smaller life.
She was Charles Whitmore's only daughter.
Lily was his granddaughter.
The ballroom belonged to Whitmore Holdings. The wedding discount had not been a discount. The florist, the catering deposit, the security staff, the private dining permit, the entire polished illusion of Hart prestige had moved because Grace asked her father to be generous.
Margaret knew it now.
Carter knew it a second later, when the woman with the leather folder opened it and handed Charles a single page.
Charles glanced at it, then looked at Carter.
“There has been a mistake,” he said. “I believed my daughter and granddaughter were guests of honor here.”
His eyes moved to Lily's stained dress.
Grace remembered sitting across from Carter's mother years earlier while Margaret praised the Hart name as if it were a crown. Grace had listened politely, knowing her own name opened doors the Harts could only rent for an evening.
“Instead, they were treated as servants no one needed to thank.”
