CHAPTER 5: One Call Beside the White Flowers

Grace walked three steps away from the circle of guests and stood beside a column wrapped in white roses.
Lily followed, still holding the wet front of her dress, and Grace tucked the child under one arm while the phone rang.
Carter watched with irritation first, then confusion.
He had always believed Grace came from comfort, not consequence. He knew her father had money, but Carter's family had trained themselves to call it old history, quiet capital, nothing useful at dinner.
They liked Grace polite.
They liked her careful.
They liked pretending she had married up.
The call connected.
Grace's voice softened, but the room still heard every word because the silence was now complete.
“Dad,” she said. “I'm at the Hart wedding dinner. Margaret poured punch on Lily. Carter hit me when I defended her.”
A pause.
Grace closed her eyes for half a second.
“No. I don't need an ambulance. I need you to come through the front doors.”
Her father had asked for one thing when she married Carter: never confuse patience with surrender. Grace had laughed then, young enough to believe love would never require the distinction.
Then she listened.
Whatever her father said made Carter's mouth go dry.
