CHAPTER 12: The Purse Opens at Last
Adrienne set the purse on the hood of the sedan as if surrendering an object could preserve her dignity.
The clasp clicked open.
Inside were the transfer papers Noah had expected, along with a passport, a cashier's check, and a hotel key card from a place two states away.
Julian stared at the hotel key as if it belonged to someone else.
"Adrienne," he said quietly.
She did not look at him.
Noah realized then that Julian had not been a partner in her escape. He had been luggage she planned to leave behind once the papers cleared.
That did not make him innocent. It only made him less chosen.
The compliance director photographed each document before touching it. Marlene called outside counsel. Thomas Bell asked security to preserve every camera angle from the last hour.
Adrienne watched procedure close around her like weather.
"Everett loved me," she said suddenly.
Noah looked at the photograph from the glove box, then at the woman who had tried to sell the yards where his father knew every night foreman's name.
"Maybe," he said. "But he stopped trusting you."
