CHAPTER 13: No More Family Discount

Julian's phone began ringing first.
Then Adrienne's. Then Thomas Bell's. The tower behind them had woken up, and with it came banks, counsel, insurers, and the clean brutal language of suspended authority.
Noah stood still while everyone else answered calls.
He had imagined this moment differently during bad nights. Louder. Angrier. Full of speeches that made Adrienne understand every hour she had cost him.
Instead, he felt tired.
Justice, he discovered, did not arrive like applause. It arrived like a checklist.
Vehicle secured. Documents preserved. Signatory authority frozen. Emergency trustee recognized pending court review.
Adrienne heard that last part and looked at him with real hatred.
"You will ruin the company," she said.
"No," Noah answered. "The company survived because drivers skipped vacations, mechanics worked Sundays, and my father kept paying payroll before he paid himself."
He closed the glove box and pocketed the brass key.
"I am only done giving family discounts to people who were never family to the work."
