CHAPTER 5: The Sedan Remembers Its Owner

The first lie broke when Noah pressed the key into the driver's door.
Adrienne laughed once, too quickly, but the lock turned with a clean metallic click that reached all three of them.
For a moment nobody moved.
The sedan's interior smelled faintly of leather, stale coffee, and the wintergreen mints Everett kept in the console. Noah had hated those mints as a boy. That smell almost undid him.
He did not let it.
He opened the door and leaned inside before Julian could decide whether touching him would look worse than allowing him to continue.
The glove box did not open with the electronic release. It had a second lock, old-fashioned and almost invisible beneath the dash.
Noah inserted the brass key.
Adrienne whispered Julian's name.
The glove box dropped open.
Inside lay a sealed gray envelope, a small drive taped to a registration card, and a photograph of Noah at seventeen standing beside Everett in the West Yard mud.
