CHAPTER 10: The Clean Sink After Midnight

After the car pulled away, the house became almost painfully quiet.
Daniel returned to the kitchen and found Emma standing beside the sink again.
For one terrible second, he thought she had gone back to cleaning.
Then he saw what she was doing.
She was looking at the empty basin.
He had washed the last plate himself while she sat wrapped in a blanket, drinking tea he made too strong because his hands had been shaking.
"I should have known," he said.
Emma looked at him.
"I should have told you sooner."
He shook his head.
"No. They should never have made you need to."
She leaned against him carefully, one hand over the child they had not yet met.
There would be consequences in the morning. Calls, letters, closed accounts, family fury dressed up as concern.
Daniel knew all of that was coming.
For once, he did not care about preserving the Mercer image.
He cared about the woman beside him, the baby under her hand, and the terrible fact that both had felt alone in a house built to shelter them.
Daniel rested his palm above hers.
Outside, rain moved softly against the windows.
Inside, the sink was clean, the house was hers, and the silence no longer belonged to anyone who had hurt her.
Daniel kissed her hair and whispered the promise he should have made louder from the beginning.
"No one in my family stands above you again."
