CHAPTER 9: The Last Night as Guests
By 10:32 p.m., the driver had been called.
By 10:38, Paige's phone stopped working with the estate network.
By 10:41, Evelyn realized the guest suite keycards had been deactivated for the morning and that Daniel intended every word.
Her pride fought panic and lost slowly.
"You are throwing us out because she washed dishes?" she asked.
Daniel stood between his mother and Emma.
"No. I am asking you to leave because you saw a vulnerable woman and tested how much power you still had over my house."
"Your house," Evelyn snapped.
Emma's voice came gently from behind him.
"No, Evelyn. Mine."
Paige tried one last time to make herself the injured party. She spoke about stress, family tension, how Emma had never really fit in.
Daniel let her finish because he wanted Emma to hear the difference between an excuse and an apology.
When Paige was done, Emma did not look angry.
She looked relieved to finally know that no amount of kindness could have made them kinder.
The room went very still.
Emma did not raise her voice. She did not stand. She did not perform strength for anyone.
She only looked at the woman who had mistaken kindness for permission.
"And you are not welcome in it tonight."
