CHAPTER 8: Every Cup They Left Behind
The room changed after the call.
Nothing moved, but everything shifted.
The coffee cups near the sofa looked different now. The untouched dessert plates looked different. The stack of silverware beside the sink looked like evidence instead of clutter.
Emma sat quietly at the island, one hand resting over her belly.
Daniel took a clean towel and dried her hands himself.
Evelyn watched the gesture as if it insulted her more than anything he had said.
"She has made you weak," Evelyn said.
Daniel folded the towel carefully.
"No. She made me decent enough to see what I should have seen sooner."
Richard finally stood.
"Evelyn, stop."
It was too late, but the words still mattered.
Emma looked up at him, surprised by the small defense.
A message arrived on Daniel's phone from the evening housekeeper: Mrs. Mercer sent me home at seven. She said your mother requested privacy for family dinner.
Another came from the driver: Mrs. Mercer asked if I could stay nearby in case your wife needed the hospital, but Mrs. Mercer Senior told me not to wait on the property.
Daniel read both without expression.
Evelyn saw enough on his face to know the house had more witnesses than she had counted.
Richard could not hold her gaze.
That was his confession.
He had not made the cruelty happen.
He had simply let it become the room.
