CHAPTER 5: The Rule Evelyn Invented
Evelyn rose from the sofa with the dignity of a woman who had spent her life being obeyed.
"You are being emotional because you just came home," she said. "Emma is sweet, but she is fragile. I was teaching her how this family works."
Daniel turned toward her fully.
"By making my pregnant wife clean up after three healthy adults?"
Evelyn's mouth tightened.
"By reminding her that marriage to a Mercer is not a vacation. Your grandmother worked until the day before she delivered your father."
Richard closed his eyes.
He knew what was coming before Evelyn did.
Daniel stepped closer, his voice lower than before.
"My grandmother had nurses, drivers, and a husband who adored her. Do not use her name to cover your cruelty."
Evelyn had always spoken of family standards as if they were sacred law. The right china. The right thank-you notes. The right tone when elders entered a room.
Emma had learned every rule because she wanted peace more than pride.
She remembered birthdays Evelyn forgot, sent flowers to women who judged her, and hosted holidays with swollen feet hidden beneath long skirts.
Tonight, Daniel finally saw the trap inside that grace. The kinder Emma became, the more his family demanded from her.
Paige finally looked up.
Emma whispered, "Daniel, please don't fight."
He turned back to her, and all the anger left his face for one second.
"I am not fighting," he said. "I am ending it."
