CHAPTER 6: The House They Forgot Was Hers

The Mercers had always treated the house as Daniel's trophy.
They praised its marble counters, its glass doors, its quiet acres beyond the windows. They called it the family estate when guests were listening and Daniel's house when they wanted influence.
Only Emma had never corrected them.
She did not like humiliating people with facts.
Daniel did not share that kindness tonight.
He walked to the drawer beneath the coffee station and removed a thin leather folder.
Evelyn watched him with irritation turning slowly into concern.
"What is that?" she asked.
Daniel opened it on the island.
"The deed."
Paige blinked.
Richard looked at Emma for the first time with real shame.
The folder had been in the kitchen for two weeks because Emma had asked Daniel to help choose a nursery contractor and the deed was attached to the permit file.
She had not hidden the truth. She had simply never weaponized it.
Evelyn stared at the page as though paper could be disrespectful.
For years she had corrected Emma's flowers, Emma's menus, Emma's posture in photographs, all inside a house Emma had quietly opened to her.
Daniel placed one finger on the page.
"This house is in Emma's name. It was purchased through her grandmother's trust before we were married. You were not being hosted by me tonight. You were guests in my wife's home."
Evelyn's face lost its color.
Emma closed her eyes, not in victory, but exhaustion.
