CHAPTER 14: A Walk Past the Silverware

Near midnight, Eleanor returned to the dining room alone.
The candles had burned low. Half the plates remained untouched. Her name card still sat beside the kitchen door, a small cream rectangle with humiliation printed in black ink.
She picked it up and held it for a moment.
Maria appeared in the service doorway. 'Would you like me to throw it away?'
Eleanor smiled sadly.
'No. Save it for the audit file.'
Maria's mouth twitched for the first time all evening.
Together they walked past the silverware, the empty wine glasses, the flowers that had already begun to lean. Eleanor touched the back of the chair beneath Martin's portrait and thought of all the ways a house could remember what people tried to erase.
She had not come back to punish them.
She had come back to stop them from inheriting the lie.
