CHAPTER 6: Mr. Calder Arrives with Rain on His Coat
The doors opened halfway through the soup course.
Cold air crossed the dining room, carrying the smell of rain and wet stone. Conversations softened before anyone understood why.
Thomas Calder stepped inside in a dark overcoat, carrying a brown leather folder with both hands. He was eighty, retired from public practice, and still feared in rooms where signatures mattered more than volume.
Adrian stood too quickly.
'Thomas,' he said. 'This is a private family dinner.'
Calder looked at the chandeliers, the donors, the trustees, the cameras hired for the foundation newsletter, and Eleanor seated beside the kitchen door.
'No,' he said. 'It is a foundation event held in a foundation property with foundation officers present.'
Eleanor did not move.
Vanessa's fingers tightened around the stem of her champagne glass.
