CHAPTER 9: Maria Brings the Truth from the Service Hall
Maria entered from the kitchen with a tray she no longer pretended was necessary.
On it lay envelopes, staff keys, printed emails, and a silver flash drive. She set them beside Calder's folder without asking permission from anyone except Eleanor, whose nod was barely visible.
Vanessa stared at the tray. 'What is this performance?'
Maria's voice was quiet, but years of service had trained it to carry across dining rooms.
'The staff records Mrs. Whitcomb requested. Dismissal threats. Instructions to move her seat. Messages telling us to call Mr. Adrian acting owner in front of guests.'
A waiter near the sideboard lowered his gaze. Another stood straighter.
Eleanor felt no triumph. Only an old ache.
She had always known houses spoke through servants. She had hoped her family would never become the sort of people servants needed to protect one another from.
