CHAPTER 15: Morning Belongs to the Door She Chooses

By morning, the newspapers would call it a governance dispute.
The donors would call their attorneys. Adrian would issue a statement about temporary confusion and family privacy. Vanessa would discover that photographers who adored elegance also adored downfall.
But before any of that, Whitcomb House became quiet again.
Eleanor stood in the front hall as rain softened the windows and the first kitchen lights warmed the corridor behind her. She could hear staff preparing breakfast with the careful relief of people who had survived a storm without needing to name it.
Adrian waited near the stairs, pale and wordless. Vanessa had gone upstairs before dawn, taking no jewels because Calder had already inventoried them.
Eleanor looked once toward the dining room, then toward the front doors.
For years, people had assumed ownership meant sitting at the head of the table.
Eleanor knew better.
Ownership was deciding which doors stayed open, which names remained on the records, and which cruelties ended before another generation learned to call them tradition.
She opened the front door herself and let the morning in.
