When the Twins Walked Into Blackwood Hall / Chapter 1 / 15 · 96 views

CHAPTER 1: Marble, Silence, and Two Small Hands

Blackwood Hall was designed to make regret look impossible.
The lobby rose six stories beneath a chandelier of bronze and crystal, with sunlight pouring through glass walls and falling cleanly across the cream marble floor. Investors stood near the fountain. Lawyers whispered by the elevators. Every surface reflected wealth so carefully that nothing human was meant to survive in it for long.
Adrian Blackwood entered from the west corridor with a speech folded in his jacket and a board vote waiting upstairs. He expected applause, champagne, and Serena Vale's hand sliding into the crook of his arm before the cameras found him.
Instead, he saw a woman standing near the center of the hall with two little boys beside her.
Mara Ellis Blackwood wore a charcoal suit, her dark hair pinned back, her face calm in a way that made the room lose its balance. The boys stood close to her legs. One clutched a green dinosaur. The other held a brown bear with one torn ear.
Adrian stopped walking.
He had buried his grief in work for three years. He had let the world say she vanished alone. But the boys looked up at him, and his own eyes stared back from two small faces.
