CHAPTER 2: The Woman Who Did Not Vanish

Mara did not move toward him.
That hurt before Adrian understood why. Once, she would have crossed any room for him. Once, she had laughed at his cold boardrooms and said marble only mattered to people afraid of carpet stains. Once, she had slept with her hand on his chest as if the sound of his heart belonged partly to her.
Now she stood as though distance had become a country, and Adrian was no longer allowed inside it.
Serena reached him first. Her silver dress whispered around her knees, elegant and sharp. She looked at Mara, then at the boys, and performed confusion for the room.
'Security should not have let guests wander in,' Serena said.
Mara's eyes stayed on Adrian. 'I did not wander. I was invited by the trustee you forgot still had a vote.'
A low current moved through the lobby. The investors heard the word trustee. Serena heard the word forgot. Adrian heard only Mara's voice, older and steadier than the memory he had punished himself with for years.
