CHAPTER 15: Three Hands on the Marble Floor

Night settled against the glass walls of Blackwood Hall, turning the lobby into a mirror of chandeliers and city lights.
Most of the guests were gone. The fountain still ran. A forgotten champagne tray waited near the columns, untouched since the first moment Mara appeared with two boys and broke the evening open.
Adrian stood near the doors, not knowing whether he had the right to ask for anything as simple as goodbye.
Mara adjusted Eli's jacket. Noah held his dinosaur under one arm and studied Adrian with the exhausted authority of a child who had survived too many adult secrets.
'Can he walk us to the car?' Noah asked.
Mara looked at Adrian for a long second. Then she nodded once.
It was not forgiveness. Adrian understood that. It was not reunion, not mercy, not the closing scene he would have begged for if begging could repair history.
It was a door opened one inch for the children, and he treated it like holy ground.
As they crossed the marble, Eli reached up without looking and placed his small hand in Adrian's.
Adrian nearly stopped breathing.
Mara saw it. Her eyes shone, but she did not look away.
Outside, the car waited beneath the portico. Behind them, Blackwood Hall remained bright, polished, and stripped of its lies. For the first time, Adrian did not care who saw him cry.
