CHAPTER 3: Adrian Learns How Memory Can Bleed

The last night Adrian saw Mara, she had been standing in rain outside his mother's estate with a suitcase at her feet and a folder pressed against her stomach.
Serena had been there too, then only a consultant with polished lies and perfect timing. She had produced photographs, forged messages, and an accusation that Mara had sold confidential documents to a rival hotel group. Adrian had believed too much too quickly because panic made betrayal easier to accept than fear.
He remembered Mara saying, 'Ask me one real question.'
He remembered not asking.
By morning, she was gone. By noon, his mother told him Mara had signed separation papers. By night, Serena had already begun cleaning the scandal from the press.
For three years Adrian told himself that if Mara wanted to explain, she knew where to find him.
Now she had found him. She had brought two children with his eyes and a silence heavier than any accusation.
