The board vote happened without champagne.
Serena was removed from the agenda before she could reach the elevators. Adrian's mother was escorted from the penthouse by counsel, her pearls still on, her authority finally naked without obedience around it.
Mara sat at the far end of the boardroom with Noah drawing dinosaurs on hotel stationery and Eli asleep against her side. She did not take Adrian's chair. She did not need to.
Judge Voss observed. Malcolm Reeves sweated. The trust attorney read each emergency motion in a voice so clean it made every lie sound dirty by comparison.
By sunset, Blackwood Hotels was under independent oversight. Serena's shares were frozen. The family trust recognized Noah and Eli as provisional heirs pending formal court confirmation.
Adrian signed every page placed before him.
When the attorney asked if he wished to contest Mara's temporary control, he looked across the table at the woman who had kept his sons alive under a false name.
'No,' he said. 'She is the only person here who earned trust.'
