CHAPTER 1: The Maid

Vanessa laughed, enjoying the small audience that had formed around them. "Because you were a maid in our house for years. You polished my mother's silver. You carried my laundry. You used to come through the service gate."
An airline agent froze behind the counter. A man in line looked down, embarrassed for them both.
Maya did not snatch back her ticket. She lowered her hand to her stomach and breathed slowly. "Yes," she said. "I worked. But that doesn't mean I was poor."
Vanessa's smile thinned. "So what? You were pretending?"
"No," Maya said gently. "I simply never showed what I have."
The answer unsettled Vanessa more than shouting would have. In the Hartwell house, servants were expected to shrink. Maya had once done that too, but Vanessa had mistaken silence for emptiness.
She glanced at the ticket. "Maya Cole? You changed your name?"
"I married."
"To whom?" Vanessa asked with a smirk. "A driver? A kitchen manager?"
Before Maya could answer, a uniformed airport staff member approached and took the handle of her suitcase.
"Mrs. Cole," he said respectfully, "your husband is waiting in the business lounge. He asked me to escort you personally."
