CHAPTER 2: The Name

Vanessa's hand loosened around the ticket folder.
"Mrs. Cole?" she repeated.
"Yes, ma'am," the staff member said. "Mrs. Adrian Cole."
The name passed through the line like a spark. Adrian Cole was not a driver. He owned the airline's luxury lounge division, two hotel chains, and several resorts the Hartwells liked to visit when they wanted to appear important.
Maya accepted her boarding pass back with a small nod. "Thank you."
Vanessa stared at her. "There must be a mistake."
"There isn't," Maya said.
The staff member stepped aside. "Shall we go, Mrs. Cole?"
Maya turned to leave, then paused. "Vanessa, you can keep your place in line. I don't want trouble."
The kindness made Vanessa look smaller. She watched Maya walk toward the frosted glass doors marked Business Lounge, every eye in the hall following her.
At the entrance, Maya rested one hand briefly on the wall. The baby moved beneath her palm. She closed her eyes for half a second.
She had not come here to shame anyone.
But some truths only needed a boarding pass to be revealed.
