CHAPTER 9: Business Class

In business class, Maya took the window seat. Adrian fastened her seat belt with unnecessary care, and she let him because love was sometimes allowing someone to worry.
Across the aisle, Vanessa sat alone. She had paid for her upgrade quietly after giving up her first-class demand. When their eyes met, she looked away first.
As the plane lifted above the city, Maya watched the airport shrink into silver lines below them. She thought of the service gate, the cold water on her hands, the documents copied at midnight, and her father's voice telling her that dignity was not proven by where one sat, but by how one treated those who stood.
Adrian took her hand. "Do you regret waiting?"
Maya looked down as their daughter kicked once, small and stubborn.
"No," she said. "If I had exposed them sooner, they would have called me angry. If I had shown my money sooner, they would have called me arrogant. Today, Vanessa saw me with nothing to prove. That was enough."
Adrian kissed her knuckles. "You were never pretending."
Behind them, Vanessa opened the folder Maya had left on her seat. Inside was not only evidence against Leonard, but a note.

Vanessa read it twice. For the first time in her life, she did not feel rich. She felt responsible.
At the front of the cabin, Maya closed her eyes, one hand resting over the child who would never be taught to measure people by uniforms, tickets, or seats.
She had worked. She had waited. She had hidden nothing that mattered.
And when the world finally looked at her, she did not need to raise her voice to be seen.
