CHAPTER 3: The Service Gate
Three years earlier, Maya had entered the Hartwell estate through the service gate with a canvas bag and a borrowed last name. She was twenty-three, recently orphaned, and heir to a fortune no one in that house knew about.
Her father, Thomas Whitmore, had built a quiet empire in shipping and real estate. After his sudden death, Maya found contracts linking his final business collapse to Leonard Hartwell. There were false invoices, shell companies, and a note in her father's handwriting: Trust no one in that house.
Maya could have sent lawyers. Instead, she chose to see the rot from inside.
Under the name Maya Reed, she became a live-in maid. She learned where Leonard kept files, how his wife spoke when guests left, and how Vanessa treated anyone without power.
Vanessa's cruelty was rarely loud. A dress dropped on the floor after Maya had folded it. A coffee cup placed just out of reach. A laugh when Maya limped after a seventeen-hour day.
Maya endured it because she needed proof.
Then Adrian Cole came to dinner at the Hartwell estate. He noticed the maid who never looked impressed by wealth. He noticed her steady eyes, her quiet intelligence, and the way she listened when powerful men assumed no one important was nearby.
