CHAPTER 8: The Apology
The flight was delayed by thirty minutes. Airport police arrived quietly, not with sirens, but with badges shown discreetly at the lounge entrance. Adrian handed over copies of the documents. Maya gave a statement. Vanessa sat near the window, pale and silent.
No one shouted. That made it worse. Wealth had taught Vanessa that disasters came with noise, lawyers, and someone paid to clean up the mess. This disaster moved softly, efficiently, like truth with a boarding pass.
After the officers left, Vanessa approached Maya. Her white coat looked suddenly too bright.
"I was cruel to you," she said.
Maya waited.
"Not because of my father. Because of me. I thought people below me existed to make my life easier."
"That is not an apology," Maya said gently. "That is an observation."
Vanessa swallowed. "I'm sorry. For the ticket. For the house. For every time I made you feel invisible."
Maya looked at her for a long moment. "I accept that you said it. I don't know yet if I accept you."
The boarding announcement sounded. Adrian helped Maya stand.
"What happens to my father now?" Vanessa asked.
"The law will decide," Maya said. "But what happens to you is still your choice."
Then she walked toward the gate with Adrian, her hand in his, her child moving softly beneath her heart.
