CHAPTER 4: The Man Who Saw Her

Adrian did not flirt with Maya that first night. He asked for water and said thank you as if the words mattered. Later, when he found her in the hallway gathering broken glass from a vase Vanessa had blamed on her, he crouched and helped pick up the largest pieces.
"You shouldn't do that," Maya whispered. "Guests don't clean."
"People do," Adrian replied.
That was the first time she smiled in the Hartwell house.
Over the next month, Adrian returned twice on business. Each time, he noticed more. Maya spoke French to a lost deliveryman. She corrected a misquoted market figure under her breath. She knew a painting in the hall was a forgery, though the Hartwells bragged about it to guests.
One rainy night, he found her at the bus stop outside the service gate, drenched and holding a file under her coat. He offered his car. She refused. He did not insist. He stood in the rain beside her until the bus arrived.
"Who are you really?" he asked.
Maya looked at him for a long moment. "Someone trying to finish what her father couldn't."
When she finally told him the truth, he did not ask how much she owned. He asked whether she was safe.
A year later, they married quietly. By then, Maya had enough evidence to ruin Leonard Hartwell.
But she waited.
