CHAPTER 3: My Dad Is Already Outside
The intruder leaned closer, not touching Noah, but close enough for Sarah’s body to go rigid.
Noah lifted his eyes past the black mask.
Through the glass entrance, beyond the reflection of ceiling lights, he could see movement on the sidewalk. Dark suits. A familiar shape near the doorframe. His father’s hand raised once, low and still.

The intruder’s head tilted slightly. The teller behind the counter stopped crying. Officer Brooks, the bank’s security guard lying near the ropes, lifted his eyes just enough to understand the boy was not guessing.
Sarah pulled Noah closer, but he still did not drop.
The second intruder near the teller counter turned his mask toward the glass entrance. It was a small movement, but every person on the floor felt it. Fear had been flowing one direction. Now it had met a wall.
The intruder in front of Noah took half a step back.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
