CHAPTER 4: The Glass Doors Open

The main glass doors were fully visible from the lobby.
Noah saw his father outside before anyone else did.
Captain Reeves stood in a dark suit with two officers behind him, calm under the harsh daylight coming through the entrance. He did not rush. He did not shout. He waited until every eye inside the bank had shifted toward him.
Then the doors opened.
Daniel Reeves stepped across the threshold naturally, both hands visible, his face controlled in the way that made panic feel embarrassed to exist.
The two officers entered behind him and stopped near the doorway, still and disciplined.
Daniel looked first at Sarah.
Then at Noah.
Only after that did he look at the masked intruder.
“Step away from my son,” he said.
No one breathed for a second.
The command was not loud. That made it more powerful. It belonged to a man who had already measured the distance, the exits, the fear, and the child standing in the middle of all of it.
The intruder did not move forward.
That was the first victory.
