CHAPTER 6: Why They Chose the Bank

Two days earlier, Sarah had noticed a gray sedan outside their apartment twice in one afternoon.
She told herself she was imagining it.
Daniel had been working late on an internal investigation tied to an old evidence fund, missing deposits, and a former police contractor who knew too much about bank transport schedules. He had not brought details home, but tension followed him into the kitchen and stayed at the table with them.
That morning, Sarah took Noah to the bank only because the school office needed a cashier’s check for a field trip.
She did not know someone had followed them.
She did not know the men in masks entered five minutes after she did because Daniel Reeves’s family was more useful than money.
The intruders wanted leverage, not blood. That did not make them less dangerous. It only made their silence feel more planned.
Now, kneeling on the marble floor, she understood the intruder’s attention had never really been on the tellers.
It had been on Noah.
Daniel understood it too.
His jaw tightened once.
Only once.
Then he buried the father under the commander, because commanders were the ones who got children out alive.

She had thought danger belonged to his job, something he carried outside the apartment and left at the door. Now she understood danger had learned their address.
Sarah remembered the gray sedan then with terrible clarity: the tinted windows, the way it moved only after she and Noah crossed the street, the way Daniel had looked toward the curtains the night before without explaining why.
